Choosing Types of Ski Gear - Ski Jasper
Types of Ski Gear
When finding your ski gear, there are several considerations that help lead to the right choice. They fall into broad categories:
The type of skiing you are doing:

Alpine Skiing, Downhill On-Piste
This is the largest single category of skiing, downill skiing on groomed slopes or on-piste. The main aspect of this skiing? Skiing from the top of a slope to the bottom runout. This type of skiing encompasses the beginning skier's first ski runs, to advanced Olympic-level ski racers.

Alpine Touring/Randonee Skiing
Alpine Touring, or Randonee requires stamina similar to cross country ski touring with the thrill of downhill skiing. It shares with ski touring of all types the love of climbing and the backcountry, but it is equally at home tearing downhill.

Telemark Skiing
The difference between Alpine Ski Touring or Randonee ski gear and Telemark skiing gear has blurred over the last several years, with innovations in design leading to advances across both ski disciplines. True Telemarking skis, however, continue to be designed around the one telemarking distinction: the telemarking ski turn, a drop-knee or lunging turn.

Cross Country Ski Touring
Defined as true ski touring, whether skiing on groomed trails, or laying down miles in backcountry, overland touring. The emphasis is on covering terrain, and lots of it, while enjoying the long-strided glides that cross country skiing offers.

Freestyle Skiing
Freestyle skiing is a catchall for many different types of skiing:
- aerialist skiers perform aerial maneuvers need light skis which maneuver easily during mid-air tricks;
- mogul riders need responsive, quick-turning skis, to navigate the chaotic bumps of the mogul field;
- Acro-Skiers need specialized skis which can easily accomodate the ballet-like maneuvers inherent to acro-skiing. Acro-skis are extremely short, and will often have twin, upturned tips for ease of skiing backwards.

Your skiing skill and experience level:
- Beginner or Recreational Skier
- Intermediate Skier
- Advanced or Professional Skier

The skiing terrain you expect to encounter:
- Groomed Slopes or Piste
- Off Piste, Backcountry skiing
- All Mountain skiing - varied terrain

The type of snow you expect to ski:
Your skiing choices, among these many considerations can be difficult, especially as the answers to one type of consideration can lead to tradeoffs in ski gear choices when compared to another type of consideration.
Additionally, you will need to decide if you would like more than one type of ski, specialized for different purposes, or one pair of skis which will service your many different skiing interests.
