Quebec's Carnival: A Fire-branded Program in 2005

In 2005, Mr. Christie’s Quebec Winter Carnival will fire up a blazing 51st edition. More than ever, the spotlight will be on the world’s largest winter carnival running from January 28 – February 13, 2005. Modern, dynamic, and always innovative, the carnival programs will share a theme: fire.

Since time immemorial, fire has been present at carnivals around the world. Winter is the time of year when the weather is at its coldest and the days at their shortest – and darkest. The 51st carnival will thumb its nose at these elements. “Fire – ice, cold – human warmth, all of these contrasts will ignite the festivities,” says Yvon Hudon, president of the carnival.

In 2005, for the first time, the carnival will be integrating a theme into most of its major activities – a theme to stir the public’s curiosity and spark their interest. From opening night on, the carnival will unveil a program blazing with sights and sounds until the fires go out with Bonhomme’s departure. Numerous fireplaces will warm the ambience at carnival sites. Fire will illuminate the opening ceremony and flame will enliven the Ice Palace, the night parades, and most of the other activities.

The 51st edition will open a new era in the carnival’s history. The organizers hope to make this event stand out by continuing to make the carnival evolve while preserving time-honored traditions.
