Heli Skiing Father

FRIDAY, 7 JULY 2006

The website of the Canadian Mountain Holidays has reported yesterday the death of Hans Gmoser. The pioneer alpinist and what many consider as the father of heli-skiing died from the injuries he sustained during a biking accident. His death came in just two days short of his 74th birthday which is today, July 7.

Gmoser was born in Austria and discovered there what would be a lifelong passion for the great outdoors. In 1951, he moved to Canada with his friend Leo Grillmair. There, he scaled the heights of Mount Alberta and Brussels Peak in the Canadian Rockies as well as other challenging peaks in the country. He also climbed the north ridge of Denali or Mount McKinley in Alaska. He also ventured into the world ski mountaineering and eventually became an inspiration to generations of mountaineers and ski mountaineers.
