Aussie Skier Camplin Retires

MONDAY, 17 JULY 2006

Aerial skiing gold medalist Alisa Camplin has recently announced her retirement from the sport, ending a career she took up when she was just 19 years old. Now 31, Camplin could have chosen to compete in September's World Cup in her native Australia, but decided against it. She said that she instead preferred to end her career with the fairytale finish in the last Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. She managed to win a bronze medal there despite being bogged down by a knee injury just a few months before the competition.

In the 2002 Winter Games, she was also able to win under near-impossible circumstances. Her doctors advised her not to compete anymore because of an injury. What she thought was a simple bone bruising turned out to be fractures on both her ankles. But at the end of the day, she was able to capture the gold medal. With that and her bronze in Torino, she became the first Australian to win two medals at consecutive Winter Olympics.
